Museum MACAN – Modern and Contemporary Art in Nusantara, is Indonesia’s first contemporary art museum located in the capital city, Jakarta. The word MACAN also translates to tiger in Indonesian, an animal well respected in Indonesian cultures.

The museum embraces the diverse local cultural art in Indonesia. The logo mark is an embodiment of the museum’s mission. It is a reflection of the many diverse ethnic groups, islands and art culture found in Indonesia. Each letterform is built upon a grid that was inspired by four cultural art groups in Indonesia. Like Indonesia the logo is built upon various cultural inspiration but come together to create a unified identity.

BLACK DECEMBER

Black December is an art manifesto created in 1974. Established by young optimistic university students in Indonesia. The manifesto critiques Indonesia’s lack of clear cultural strategy in art making, and that the producers of arts and culture are not in the smallest sense aware of the discourse regarding the most basic human problems in Indonesian culture.

Museum MACAN unveils an exhibition inspired by the manifesto’s ethos – the lack of cultural art diversity outside of traditional art in Indonesia. The exhibition embarks on an art journey, showcasing modern contemporary pop art from Indonesia. The curation of the artwork will explore the meaning of Black December in modern day Indonesia,
